How to turn any wired earphones into bluetooth earphones
For over 10 years the only set of earphones I have used have been the Bang & Olufsen A8’s. They have awesome sound quality and are comfortable and don’t fall out your ears due to the over-ear adjustable hooks.
However, technology has moved on a lot in the past decade and bluetooth audio is becoming the standard. I do also own a set of BeoPlay H8 headphones and they are fantastic but for me they are more for indoor listening.
When Bang & Olufsen recently announced that they were coming out with a new bluetooth earphone I was so exited. So excited until I realised it was the BeoPlay H5 earphones which, although I am sure they still have the superior sound quality I am used to, I am not a fan of the ‘earbud’. They always fall out my ears and just don’t feel right for me. Why couldn’t they have incorporated the over ear hook of the A8 that has proved so popular for them? Well, they didn’t – so could I? Yes!
How to convert your Bang & Olufsen A8 earphones to work with Bluetooth
I had a spare set of A8 earphones so I decided to see if I could somehow make them into a bluetooth version. This also came at the same time as I had recently updated to an iPhone 7 so my current A8’s were pretty much useless unless I remember to carry the ugly Apple adaptor with me at all times. Basically, this little DIY electronics project was a no brainer.
What do you need?
I am no electronics expert (yes, despite having a Degree in Electronic & Electrical Engineering but that’s another story) but here’s what I needed in order to take on this project:
Total Cost Of Making Bluetooth A8 Earphones
Disassemble the bluetooth receiver and take note of which connections go to where on the circuit board and unsolder the connections
Cut the A8 earphones and strip back to reveal the wires
Solder the A8 wires onto the same points on the bluetooth circuit board as the ones that were unsoldered
Reassemble the bluetooth receiver
Use the mouldable glue to seal the bluetooth receiver at each end – leave to set for a few hours
Connect your new ‘StevePhones’ to your device of choice and listen to great quality music with no wires!
This is the best thing ever! I have no wires, great quality music on the go and the connection is very stable. The only thing I might add is some sort of wire cover to add a bit more weight to the wires but other than that I love it!
